Part Ten

Family that stayed in the Otter Valley

Back in Devon, in the late 1850’s, Joel’s brother, Robert Carter and wife Eliza left Podbury’s and moved to farm at Hayne, Tipton St John, near Ottery St Mary.  This farm was twice the size of Podbury’s.

Hayne had formally been farmed by Joel’s brother-in-law, William Salter.  Salter died in 1855 and by 1861 his widow Elizabeth Salter, was at Hayne Cottage, on Seaway Lane, Tipton St John.  Living with Elizabeth was her 26 year old niece Anne Carter (daughter of Elias Carter jnr and his first wife).  By 1871 at Hayne Cottage, Elizabeth was joined by her sister-in-law, widow Sarah Carter (second wife of Elias Carter jnr) and in 1881 Elizabeth Salter and Sarah Carter were still at Hayne Cottage.

Of the younger generation, on the 1881 census, Anne Carter (daughter of Elias Carter jnr and his first wife) was married to Charles Farrant, a lace manufacturer and they were living with their children in Battersea, south of the river in London.  On the 1881 census Elias William Carter (son of Elias Carter jnr and his wife Sarah) was married and living in Woolwich, London, working as a draper.

Robert Carter, farmer at Hayne, died in 1873 and in 1881 his widow, Eliza Carter was living at Elmgrove House, next door to Hayne Cottage and her sister-in-laws.

In the late 1850’s, Joel and Mary Carter left Harts and with their son Sydenham moved to Bridge End, Harpford where they are located on the 1861 census.

By the 1871 census they might have moved again but nothing is very clear as few houses in the village are named.  Joel and Sydenham are both described as farmers with twenty acres of land and occasionally employ one labourer.

Joel and Mary Carter remained in the parish of Harpford all their lives and outlived many of their family.
